House of Austrian History

Vienna opened the House of Austrian History in 2018, exactly 100 years after the foundation of the First Republic on November 12, 1918. It is situated in the historical rooms of the Neue Burg, part of Vienna’s Hofburg on Heldenplatz. The development of Austria is vividly presented on a total area of 1,800 m2. This includes the end of the Habsburg monarchy through the First Republic, the annexation to the Nazi Reich and the founding of the Second Republic to the present day.

In addition to a permanent exhibition, which focuses on several contemporary historical themes and is constantly updated, the House of Austrian History offers regular special exhibitions and web exhibitions. The aim is to provide visitors with a well-contextualized examination of contemporary Austrian history. This includes, most importantly, Austria's role during the Nazi dictatorship. The museum not only wants to look back, but above all to look forward and question the impacts of the past on our present and future. Speaking of the future: In 2028, the House of Austrian History will relocate to new, larger premises in the MuseumsQuartier Wien (MQ).
