The Third Man Museum

The private museum is in the vicinity of the atmospheric Vienna Naschmarkt and depicts everyday life in post-war Vienna with a spectacular collection of originals from around the world as much as the piece of cinematic history associated with this film.

16 rooms housing 2,500 original exhibits and, of course, the famous film zither by Anton Karas can be seen in the Third Man Museum. His film music went around the world and triggered a real zither boom in the 1950s. Four hundred playable cover versions of the "Harry Lime theme" give an impression of how successful the music was at the time.

In addition, the museum owns original screenplays, cameras used on set and the cap of little Hansel. There is also correspondence relating to the film written by its author, Graham Greene, and 83 posters for the film that were exhibited around the world. In 2023, the Third Man Museum also acquired the Elchinger gravestone, which features prominently in all three cemetery scenes in the film. It was subsequently moved to the museum. Another highlight is a still-functioning cinema projector from 1936, which plays a short film sequence. "The Third Man" was first shown on such projectors in 1950. - A film like no other, presenting the war-ravaged city and Allied-occupied Vienna.
