Viewing points in Vienna
A landmark of the city, St. Stephen's Cathedral is one of the most popular viewing points in Vienna. The architectural masterpiece in the heart of the city center can be ascended in two ways: an elevator takes visitors to the viewing platform on the north tower, where the large cathedral bell 'Die Pummerin' is located. A somewhat more strenuous option is to climb the 343 steps of the tight spiral staircase to the Türmerstube in the south tower, which is almost 67 meters high. The view of the historic center is fantastic from both viewing points. A ride in a gondola on the Giant Ferris Wheel in the Prater offers magnificent panoramic views of the city and impressive views of the spacious green area at the foot of this Viennese landmark. And in the Schönbrunn Palace Park, another sightseeing must in Vienna, it is worth climbing the hill to the Gloriette and enjoying the historic view of the city from on high.
In the MuseumsQuartier (MQ), the viewing terrace called MQ Libelle on the roof of the Leopold Museums offers the best views of Vienna city center – with free admission. The Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna and the Naturhistorisches Museum Vienna lie here at one's feet. Designed by Laurids Ortner, the MQ Libelle is also an architectural highlight. The Austrian artist Eva Schlegel designed the glass façade, which is supplemented by light installations in the shape of a ring by Brigitte Kowanz. The light rings are a sign, visible from afar, that something is happening up here on the roof of the Leopold Museum.
The Danube Tower, built in 1964 on the occasion of the Vienna International Garden Show, is a great viewing point because of its height. Two elevators whoosh you up in 35 seconds to the rotating restaurant at a height of 165 meters with panoramic views across the whole of Vienna and the surrounding area. In the city center, it is worth visiting the House of the Sea aquarium and vivarium, located near to the bustling Mariahilfer Strasse. From its viewing platform, you can see for miles across the urban roofscape.
And then there are, of course, the most beautiful viewing points in the green spaces, which can be explored on walks and hikes. Good places for a view of the whole city are Vienna's local mountains Kahlenberg, Leopoldsberg and Bisamberg, the Vienna Woods with their observation points and the vineyards on the outskirts of the city.
