Two men sitting in front of a coffee house

Gumpendorfer Straße

Gumpendorfer Straße lies between Mariahilfer Straße and Naschmarkt. It was once a nondescript side street, but restaurants are bars now also flourish here, thanks to the neighboring MuseumsQuartier. Right at the beginning of Gumpendorfer Straße, at the boundary with the 1st District, several trendy restaurants have made themselves at home.

Addicted to Rock offers fans of rock music burgers, lots of gin, beer, cocktails and the occasional unplugged concerts. The Asian restaurant Ra'mien impresses with excellent cuisine and minimalist interior architecture. Unlike the Ra'mien Bar in the basement: here, the furnishings of an old Chinese restaurant form an attractive contrast to the electronic DJ sounds. Next door, the ShanghaiTan goes for a dim ambience. Exotic dining can be enjoyed here long past midnight, and there's a cellar with cozy booths.

People head for the Top Kino on the corner of Rahlgasse for more than just the films. Trendy guests enjoy a drink at the bar in the adjacent restaurant. Similar to the crowd at the Phil, where people enjoy coffee in total relaxation on second-hand sofas and chairs. Most of them date to the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s and can also be purchased. The same applies to selected DVDs, books and records.

From the café to the bar

Just one door further on is the next trendy place to go: If Dogs Run Free is a modern cocktail bar that is different from the usual bar clichés and trendy ambience. A classically traditional Viennese café is situated right opposite: Café Sperl is of the most beautiful coffee houses in Vienna and still has old billiards tables in use. A short detour to Theobaldgasse is also worthwhile: Here, you'll find Mon Ami, a charming mix of bar and café.

On the corner of Girardigasse, the design duo Walking Chair has transformed a red-light venue into a picturesque bar called Puff, a name that makes historical reference to its former use! Humorous cocktail machines were installed between the black leather bench booths of yesteryear, light flowers made from PET bottles create great effects in front of the mirrored walls and highballs of every kind are the theme for the cocktails. The pretty bistro Ma Belle is a tip for good cocktails. On the food front, diners are pampered with French cuisine, also worth recommending!

The Eissalon actually used to be an Italian ice cream parlor. There's ice cream here again today; in the evening, there's a bar serving cocktails and wines. The Luster Bar is a trendy and always well-frequented cocktail bar with recommendable drinks and fine bar food. The chandelier which gives the bar its name floats above the heads of the guests as an interesting shelf construction for the drinks bottles.

And those who dare to go a little further to Esterhazygasse can stop off at another cool bar: The Miranda Bar offers unusual cocktails and, due to the wide range of pastel colors, cannot really be visually grouped with classic bars. Opposite Frau Bernhard is a small, cozy spot that also presents itself as a champagne bar. Yes, there's champagne, but also very good wines and small dishes.
