14 Great Women, 14 Great Places
ivie, the free city guide app for Vienna, offers “14 Great Women, 14 Great Places”, a sightseeing experience dedicated to exceptional female role models. “14 Great Women, 14 Great Places” tells the story of Vienna as the home and adopted home of women who broke with traditional gender roles. The city guide presents famous figures who paid little heed to the conventions of their time and links them with Viennese places and institutions that are well worth a visit.
These include names such as the actress and inventor Hedy Lamarr and the physicist Lise Meitner – the woman who discovered nuclear fission. However, women whose work has received far too little attention over the decades, such as that of the sculptor and painter Teresa Feodorowna Ries, are also included in the guide. Ceramic artworks by Wiener Werkstätte employee Vally Wieselthier feature here, as do locations that commemorate Nobel Peace Prize winner Bertha von Suttner and composer Constanze Geiger. This is because the male-dominated perception of history has obscured many exciting accounts of women’s achievements.

The nuclear physicist Lise Meitner is honored with a memorial in the impressive collonaded courtyard of the University of Vienna. And the Vienna Music Society has a connection to Constanze Geiger, whose “Ferdinandus Waltz” was the first piece of music by a woman ever to be played at the Vienna New Year’s Concert.
The work of Nannette Streicher awaits you at the Vienna Museum of Science and Technology. She was the piano maker to Ludwig van Beethoven.
