Parking in Vienna
Vienna is covered by an almost city-wide, continuous and metered short-stay parking zone system. Parking for residents is possible only with a parking ticket or "Parkpickerl" permit. This is a compelling reason to leave your car behind when travelling to Vienna and use public transport instead. Whether for sightseeing, shopping or going to a restaurant – the subway trains, trams, and buses of Wiener Linien (urban transport companies) are quick and reliable.
Short-stay parking zones in Vienna
Almost the entire city of Vienna is a short-stay parking zone.
- Parking is subject to a charge from Monday to Friday between 9 am and 10 pm (excluding public holidays).
- The maximum parking duration is two hours.
- The parking zones are marked on this map of Vienna.
Different short-stay parking regulations may apply in Vienna’s shopping streets – these are specifically signposted wherever they apply. Generally, parking on shopping streets is subject to a charge between 8 am and 6 pm from Monday to Friday and between 8 am and 12 noon on Saturdays (excluding public holidays). The maximum parking time is 90 minutes with a parking ticket or a “Parkpickerl” permit (insert it in the parking meter), which allows you to park in the particular district.
Two-wheel motorized vehicles such as mopeds and motorcycles are exempt from the short-stay parking zone regulations.
Parking tickets and cell phone parking
Parking tickets to pay the parking fee are available in paper form or electronically by means of cell phone parking for 15, 30, 60, 90 and 120 minutes.
The parking fee is €1.25 per 30 minutes (as of January 1st, 2025 the fee is €1.30 per 30 minutes).
You can purchase parking tickets at these sales outlets:
- Tobacco shops
- Cigarette machines
- Filling stations
- Post offices
- Wiener Linien (Vienna Transport Authority) ticket offices
- Wiener Linien ticket machines
- Motorists’ organizations ARBÖ and ÖAMTC
There are no on-street parking ticket machines in Vienna.
Parking tickets can also be purchased via text message or an app using cell phone parking. You must first complete registration (provide a cell phone number and vehicle registration number) and top up your parking credit. You can find more information about the process on the Handyparken website (in German).
In the short-term parking zones, you must have a parking ticket from the first minute of parking onward, even for short stops to unload luggage, for example. Free, 15-minute parking tickets are available, which you can obtain in hotels, tobacconists, at Tourist Info offices or via Handyparken. The free 15-minute parking tickets may not be combined with other parking tickets.
The parking ticket must be completely filled out and placed in an easily visible place behind the windscreen. If several parking tickets are used at once, the same arrival time must be marked on each parking ticket.
Guests with physical disabilities need a parking permit pursuant to Art. 29b Road Traffic Regulations (StVO) 1960 (European parking permit) in order to enjoy unlimited parking in disabled parking spaces and in Vienna's short-stay parking zones. The permit must be placed in a visible location behind the windscreen. This also applies to people with disabilities traveling in the vehicle as passengers.
Please inquire at your accommodation provider about parking possibilities or ask for a daily parking ticket.
Park & Ride Vienna, parking garages
When visiting Vienna, we recommend leaving your car behind and using public transport. Reasonably priced parking is available on the outskirts of the city from €4.40 per day in Vienna’s Park & Ride facilities.
All Park & Ride facilities are directly connected to a subway line, making it easy and convenient to reach the city center.
A dense network of garages (higher charges apply) is available in and around the city center. You can find an overview of all parking garages and multi-story car parks in Vienna at www.parken.at/wien.
Parking for residents
Some districts have parking spaces specifically reserved for local residents, which can NOT be used with a valid parking ticket (penalties apply!). These zones are designated by no stopping/no parking signs with additional panels "excluding vehicles with a parking sticker for district xx and people with disabilities (wheelchair symbol)". Caution: The parking ban also applies on weekends and public holidays.
